The only reason you spell things 'right' is because after we (the Brits) went over and colonised(and get bored and left), the majority of settlers were uneducated and so the language became simpler, such as missing out the letter 'u' in colour and because it 'sounds right' putting a 'z' in rationalise.
Phrases from that MORE PRIMITIVE language developed like any other. into ones such as 'jerking off' (which doesn't make sense unless at the time you are also having either a muscle spasm or an epileptic fit) and 'mom' (which shouldn't exist because it came from mum, from mother-no one says mo-ther do they?)
