This is mainly because Africans have similar cultures to the original people of the west, the Indians down there are all familiar with shamanism, herbalism, creativity and so on. There wouldn't have been much they couldn't adapt to if you think about it.
Unlike Europeans who feared witches in their land, Africans would not have called people who practiced forms of foregin shamanism words like "pagans".
In fact, forms of the spirit religion of voodoo exist in South America for this reason, so it was only a matter of time before cultures blended together due to their similarites. Europeans who originally came over here feared such activities mainly because they were targets for attacks everytime they would spit on an African who took their saliva and made them regret it. Also because of the witch-like figure they knew back home who could do harm in very similar ways.
