If you watch the movie you see it was the Russian that saved the mission. If not for him the Americans would not have left the space station.
As far as it being Americans saving the world it was more about being the best drilling team. Thanks to technology and our constant desire for new sources of oil it makes sense the best team was American but that is about it.
