The Spartans were the first people to openly be homosexual. As a way to curve population growth, Sparta promoted it as a way to build comradeship within its citizens. You are correct there are other ways of practicing birth control such as a sexuality and abstinence though people would still want to fuck someone other than themselves.

I won't argue they're the first to be openly gay but that doesn't mean they invented it. It just means they used it for their society and promoted it in a new way. Although there are references in the Bible to Sodom and Gomorrah which predates Sparta. Don't need to elaborate what that means
