In the US what is the proper locker room etiquette for an adult male? At my gym (YMCA) there are private showers with curtains but I have seen guys walk to the shower with just a towel in hand and everything hanging out. Just wondering what anyone else thought.

some of the gyms have communal showers and some have private. I walk around with my cock flopping and some others do too. I like it when people look. ;)

At the risk of sounding old, don't try covering up, but looking is asking for somebody to take a swing at you.
Then again, attitudes seem to be changing. It's been a long time since I was in a locker room, and I wouldn't be terribly upset to never be in one again.

I think it's whatever the guys decide unless stated somewhere at the entrance
