Toyota Motor Corp rolled out a production prototype of a compact rear-wheel-drive sports car called the Hachiroku, which is Japanese for �86.� The car was unveiled during a press preview at the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival at the Fuji Speedway in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan.
Toyota developed the 86 with rival car maker Subaru, a unit of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. The new model is aimed at bringing a dash of youthful excitement to Toyota�s staid image. The sporty machine is to arrive at U.S. dealerships this spring. And while the Hachiroku name may work in Japan, the car will need a different moniker here.
How about Supra?
After all, the �86″ name is a throwback to the much-loved, souped-up Corolla models of the 1980s. Officially called the Sprinter Trueno and Levin, those speedy specials were better known by their company code name of AE86. Today that name is alphanumeric magic for hot-rodders who like to modify Japanese cars.
For many hardcore car fans in the States, the Toyota Supra was the ultimate Japanese performance car of the 1980s. When rival Nissan Motor Co. resurrected its Z sports car a decade ago, some thought the Surpra would soon follow. Could the new model mark the Supra�s return?
